I was reminded to keep busy even on a Friday night, but I decided to scare myself with a Hannibal movie.

 

Hannibal Rising. The name tells it all, about an innocent boy morphing into that creepy man eater. Sadly, by imposing a childhood tragedy on Hannibal's resume, the character was reduced to yet another cliche - "I am what I am for a reason" - just like that T-bag out of Fox River. It's all circumstantial.

 

In the other movies, Hannibal Lecter becomes the symbol of fear not because he kills for a cause - revenge or whatsoever - but rather, the lack of it. People might quiver at his gruesome methods, and yet fear truly about the next victim unknown.

 

If you walk out of the cinema thinking "What? Shall I feel sorry for that S.O.B now?", it's probably not a good one for you.

 

Some moments of the movie worth remembering:

 

1. "Memory is like a knife. It hurts you."

It hurts only because you are letting it, and you love that pain. No one escapes from that sadist mentality. There is a Hannibal in all of us.

 

2. "You ate her too."

I think on some level, Hannibal knew he also ate his little sister. The last scene of his carving an "M" (for Missha) on "John Abruzzi's" chest and eating him alive is also a clue to me.

 

Some questions and afterthoughts:

 

1. Early childhood studies can be interesting. Some toddlers fall down and sit there and cry; some, on the contrary, just get up and walk again. Why? Same thing, some children with traumatic past grow up fine, and some become serial killers? Why?

 

2. My best friend Li Hao and Hannibal Lecter happen to have the same initials, both are medical students, smart and handsome. Coincidence?

 

3. How relevant is the cannibalism in mythology and religion with LH's version? Zeus' dad, the prime minister of the ancient Chinese 'Shang' empire - 商纣, Jesus' disciples (not to take literally of course). I will probably burn in hell for saying this.
