August 16 Good as GoldThe first week seems like a month and vice versa
It's probably a bad idea to reflect upon my maiden month at the expense of much deprived zzZz in the midst of a busy earning season; but it's worse not to. Life can only be lived looking forward and be understood looking backward - famous quote from beloved prof Kosnik. there is another thing about Tom I admire, soldier mentality. things like waking up every morning at 6. Back then that was like MI3 for me and now I am in the same league. no matter how late I sleep, I get up at 6:12. well, it's getting late again and i shall be real brief and hence very disorganized.
First impression
Everything they said about this firm turn out to be true. prestige and pressure. prestige not in the money, but in the people. don't be surprised to be sitting next to a BA who is quadro-lingual; or working with a VP who knows the president personally; or joking with an intern who was the province champ in the University Entrance exam 4 years ago. everyone is unique in some way. if you are not right now, you better become one sooner than later. pressure not from the killer hours, but from the intensity those hours demand. want to go home before mid-night? forget about single jobshop flow. your computer has two screens for a reason. over the month, i think my attention span is short, and it's getting shorter. want another tip in time management? schedule the most boring work (eg mandatory training) at 3pm on Wednesdays. Personally that's my weekly low in terms of efficiency.
Expectation
a pretty tricky thing. Last thursday afternoon before leaving for business trip, my boss said "you need to understand every single detail about our models (13 of them) by Sept when I come back."
I said "i know that's not possible but I will try."
1 hour later when he is in the airport before take-off, he called and said "yeah that's too much, but do try."
I said "yes and bon voyage."
Not good answers but I am not sure if there is one actually. There will always be a 1-week, and a 3-week deadline in your calendar and I also know fundamentals are important and cannot be rushed. As I said, it's a tricky thing.
Relationship
obviously different from school. suddenly you are this analyst person and have to deal with clients (pretty bossy sometimes); with companies (have to call people "A zong3","B zong3"... 0_o""); and with internal sales people (who still see you as this new kid in town, which is a good thing. I feel young. :))) I don't really know what people think of me. and I don't really care.
Next month target
Roadshow with this buy-rated company to Shanghai next week.
PRC investment license exam on the weekend back from business trip - I just want a pass.
3 initiations (start covering 3 more companies) - I really want to do them well.
Get a fridge for my apartment
Last word
A friend asked me, is your job all about money? I disagree. It's also about facts and insights. So far it's been good.
And it's good as gold. |
